Evil in heaven
Sinner
under saint suit!
Its winter time, in the morning everything is white as
a sheep. Children are going to school
holding little bottles with hot water in their hands; this is the only way of dealing
with this weather in Mooi River, little town near Pietermaritzburg. Those who came late were punished. Teachers
make use of anything that could teach them a lesson, regardless of this
condition. Every day Sbongile wakes up
in a morning to see every child on their way to school. They are reminding her of how her daughter
loved school before the world turned up against her. Back then, her daughter, Slindile was doing
grade 12 at Eminyezaneni Senior Secondary School. She was a very clever, hardworking
person and dedicated to whatever she was doing. She was a good example to this community
especially to young people, even though she was not from a stable family. Her father left home when she was three years
old and she had never seen him, even in pictures.
Even though she had a mother, Cindy, her life has been
difficult ever since, not because of her father’s absence but because her
mother could not provide her with everything she needed. Although this is hard for her, she managed to
cope all these years hoping to make her mother proud one day. Every time she read same old two books, one
before she visits her dream world and read another when padding to school. Her
father wrote these books before his disappearance. Her mother gave them to her
hoping they will play her father’s role. At first Slindile did not read them
until reaching her mature stage.
Both of these books had lessons concerning with most
challenges that one will face in life. It’s now September and Slindile is not
lucky in getting bursaries but still hoping that God will present a benefactor
towards her one day. Her ears were everywhere waiting for any heralds for her
to run away from this lurch. Her
mother used to tell her that all she needs to do is to pass and all other tribulations
will take care of themselves. She
believed it like everyone would, until this day when Pastor Chiliza came to her
school during Morning Prayer session. His preaching gave hope to everyone
especially after sharing his story that he was once a street kid.
Slindile sobbed quietly and after assemble she went to
him for few advices but she couldn’t stop herself from asking how exactly he
became so fruitful if he was really a street kid. “My child I know every night
you wish you could wake up on another day with things being different. It’s
acceptable to feel like someone hitched you to a tow truck that pulls you back
but I’ll advise you to invite God to your life, to be your saviour. Here, take
this card and come to my office next Sunday”. When she told her mother, she
refused to let her go. She told her one same statement, “for now my angel you
need to pass, stop stressing yourself with all this. Remember, it’s the love of
success that leads to succeeding”. Slindile
thought of what her mother said but she told herself that her mother does not
believe in God. She pondered the whole
week; however, she had already made her decision so nothing her mother said would
change it.
Sunday came
like a blink of an eye and she was there on time, like any kid in her school
would. They welcomed her with great hospitality since that was her first time
in church. After everything, she went to the pastor, “Welcome my child, God is
happy to see you and even Angels are singing joyful songs. I think it will be
better if you stay for later prayer session”, said Pastor. Slindile nodded her
head but with a smile, “I’m happy to hear that God recognises me but I’m not
allowed to come after 6 O’clock at home, and I didn’t tell my mother that I am
coming here so I am sure she’ll go mad”, says Slindile looking down with
embarrassment. But the Pastor insisted,
“Don’t worry my child I’ll give you a lift and maybe get a chance to meet your
mother, I know she’ll like me” says the Pastor assuring Slindile.
Slindile had no choice but to stay. She then set by
the door waiting for that prayer session. Even when pastor tells her to get
inside she just replied with the power of silence. As the Sun drops, lower and
other shadows start creeping into the church house. Slindile is now getting
bored and freezing, so she went inside, “pastor! It getting late and it seems
like I’m the only one freezing out there”, says Slindile. “Oh sorry my child, come inside, I’ll go and
make you something to eat”. He then went to the kitchen.
When Slindile was eating, struggled on how to use fork
and knife; and looking embarrassed by the thought of that. The Pastor received
an urgent call, “My child! I am sorry I should rush somewhere but I promise to
take you home as soon as I come back. Make yourself at home and it been
extremely hot so it’s better if you take a shower while I am away, oh sorry again
the prayer session has been cancelled”, says the Pastor. He then went to the car and left without
taking any response from her. Maybe it
has been really urgent.
After an hour without pastor showing up, she went to
take a shower, she is only concerned about experiencing a shower bath for the
first time. Pastor Chiliza came back in
few minutes after taking a bath. Slindile was shocked and surprised by what she
was seeing and said to him “Pastor what is wrong now? Where’s the suit you were
wearing? And why are you drunk?” he set next to her and start brushing her, “Stop!
What are you doing” Slindile shouted at the Pastor and became really angry at
what he was doing to her. “Stop asking
many questions! I am doing this for you, trust me it will be fun, you’ll
enjoy”, Pastor changing his voice and his hands were all over her.
At first, she was shocked but within few minutes she
started screaming, asking for help but unfortunately no one could hear her. She thought of fighting back and luckily she
did not finish her food and knife was still at the coffee table. If God could help her reach that knife, maybe
pastor will realise that he is doing a wrong thing. She then fought to get
there first and luckily, she took it first. Even after grapping this knife pastor
continued to force her into sex and it that was burgeoning. She had no choice but to use what on her hand.
In few minutes, there was silence, and blood all over the floor. Slindile did
not know what to do. She was shocked and confused. She then put on her clothes
and ran away, leaving the knife next to him. What about her fingerprints,
anyway she has the proof that pastor was drunk, only if she wasn’t faking it?
All these questions were running through her mind and tears were running down
like a river. She ran all the way home
and her mother was not around. She just
went to bed without eating.
Early in the morning, sun hidden above clouds and
corks helping those without alarms. Slindile is already up in bed sitting at
her study table. She is thinking of what she did, that she murdered a Pastor
but hey! It can be proven
that he was drunk, unless if he faked it. She then went to her
mother, “Mom! Can I talk to you for a second before you go to work? I’ve done
something terrible” Her mother did not respond and when she got to her bedroom,
she found her crying. “Mom why are you crying and that picture you’re staring
at is for Pastor” Slindile was confused how did her mother found out about what
she did, is he dead. “Mom talk to me, I thought you didn’t know Mr Chiliza and
most of all he’s a Pastor”.
She then nodded her head and tears flow over her face.
“Slindile I should have told you this many years ago. Anyway, I knew this day
would come. I was young, using drugs when I found myself into his arms. He
promised to help me change my doings, but in return, he wanted to sleep with
me, that indirectly agonised me. I had no choice; I was tired of my life”. “Mom
I don’t get you, what are you talking about? What about the one who left books
for me?” “I can see you’re surprised, but it is what it is! He is your father
and that one was not your father, that why he left us. When you were three
years old, he found out about pastor and got so angry”. Slindile kneeled and
wept in front of her mother with chagrin face, “After these entire years mom?”
she then went outside and bounced herself into the police. Since that day,
Sbongile is still stuck on her past, blaming herself for what had happened to
her daughter but of course she warned her not to go to that church, so yeah
Self-concussion! {Uzenzile akakhalelwa, kukhalelwa uzumekile}
